Seeing Clearly: Our Beliefs Through a Liberated Lens

At Liberated Lens, we understand that our conditioning influences how we see and engage with the world around us.

Like most women our age, Michelle and I grew up in the 70's, 80's and 90's being socialized into traditional gender roles for women. These gender roles and understandings shaped our sense of self in ways that were limiting and profoundly damaging.  As we approached midlife and began to examine our beliefs and optimize our lives, we began the challenging and liberating endeavor of freeing ourselves from norms and role definitions that weren't serving us. This journey led us to develop new core principles that now guide our lives.

We invite you to explore these core beliefs below to gain insight into the principles that drive us in all aspects of our lives, especially our business. By examining societal influences, questioning ingrained assumptions, and shedding misleading paradigms, our goal is to offer you a clearer, more accurate vision of reality, empowering you to make informed decisions that truly align with your needs and desires.

Read the in-depth explanation of our philosophy below and feel how it resonates with you, then join a retreat, sign up for life coaching, or somatic therapies with Michelle, and become part of our community and movement dedicated to holistic well-being and personal growth.

Much love,

Nic

Our Philosophy

Holistic Well-being and Personal Growth

Holistic Well-being:

At the core of our philosophy is a dedication to holistic well-being. We understand health as a comprehensive integration of mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. It’s essential to consider these elements together, as they are interconnected and impact one another, promoting both healing and personal growth.

The Body:

We believe that optimizing your body's needs is the first step to achieving true well-being, as nothing else works well without meeting these foundational requirements. Your body needs balanced nutrition to fuel its functions and support growth and repair, physical activity to move energy and maintain strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, rest for recovery, regeneration, and overall well-being, and proper hydration for metabolic processes, temperature regulation, and cellular health. Lastly, a connection with nature supports mental and physical health by fostering a sense of grounding and reducing stress.

Real Self-care:

We educate our clients on the differences between self-care prescribed by societal norms and what is truly beneficial for the human body. Understanding this distinction is essential as mainstream ideas of self-care often prioritize commercial interests over genuine well-being. We emphasize practices that support the body's natural healing processes and advocate for self-care routines that truly nurture the physical, mental, and emotional health of individuals.

The Formation of Self:

From a sociological perspective we guide our clients in discovering how the self is formed, influenced by various factors including culture, family dynamics, and personal experiences. This understanding is crucial as it helps individuals recognize the external influences on their behaviors and beliefs, empowering them to make conscious choices about who they want to become. This process enhances self-awareness and promotes personal growth, enabling clients to navigate their lives more authentically.

Attachment Styles:

We educate our clients about different attachment styles and their impact on relationships and personal growth. By understanding how early experiences with caregivers shape attachment patterns, clients can work towards healthier relationships and personal healing. This knowledge is key to breaking cycles of emotional distress and building secure, fulfilling connections with others.

Attitude Formation:

We educate our clients on how attitudes are formed, a crucial aspect for anyone seeking self-healing. This knowledge enhances self-awareness, enabling individuals to identify and understand the origins of negative patterns that may impede their healing. By understanding how attitudes are formed, clients are empowered to challenge and change unhelpful attitudes. This leads to improved decision-making by enabling a critical evaluation of the influences behind their choices. Additionally, it enhances interpersonal relationships by promoting empathy and understanding, recognizing that others' attitudes are shaped by various factors.

Attraction, Love, and Intimacy:

We educate our clients on the dynamics of attraction, love, and intimacy, enhancing their ability to navigate relationships with greater awareness. By exploring psychological, emotional, and social factors, clients can foster healthier connections. Our approach covers stages from initial attraction to deep bonds and addresses common challenges with strategies for effective communication and conflict resolution. This understanding helps clients recognize their needs and those of their partners, leading to more meaningful relationships where both parties feel valued. We empower clients to build stronger, resilient connections, contributing to overall well-being and happiness.

Intersectional Feminism:

We believe intersectional feminism is vital for the personal growth and well-being of women in midlife. By recognizing diverse factors like race, class, sexuality, and ability, we foster an inclusive, empathetic environment that values each woman's unique experiences. This approach promotes equity, empowers you to embrace your whole self, and supports your journey to resilience and fulfillment.

Self-Leadership:

We promote and teach self-leadership as a vital route to both personal and collective empowerment. We believe that everyone has the inherent ability to guide themselves through life's challenges. Practicing self-leadership allows the various aspects of a person—emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual—to function in unity, facilitating continuous self-improvement. This empowerment enables individuals to better manage life's obstacles, adapt to changes, and realize their fullest potential.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation:

We are dedicated to continuous learning and adaptation, and optimizing our lives. Embracing lifelong learning and staying receptive to new ideas and experiences is vital for personal growth. We view adaptation as an ongoing process that enriches our understanding of life and enhances our ability to navigate its challenges, allowing us to continually refine and improve our lives for greater fulfillment and well-being.

Vulnerability:

We cherish the process of healing through vulnerability. By openly discussing our fears, failures, and uncertainties, we view this openness as a form of strength that cultivates deeper connections and personal growth. Embracing vulnerability is fundamental to our approach, enhancing the development of more meaningful and robust relationships.

Mindfulness:

We train our clients in mindfulness to interrupt automatic thoughts and behaviors, enhancing decision-making in real-time. Mindfulness teaches presence and awareness, enabling individuals to respond to life's challenges with clarity and calm. This skill is essential for breaking habitual reactions that can undermine personal and professional goals.

Emotional Liberation:

We believe in the liberation of emotions, encouraging individuals to explore and express their feelings authentically without judgment or shame. Embracing emotional liberation fosters greater self-awareness, resilience, and emotional well-being, empowering individuals to live fully and authentically.

Understanding the Mind and Behavior

Neuroplasticity and a Growth Mindset:

We emphasize the importance of neuroplasticity and adopting a growth mindset for continuous personal development. Understanding that the brain can change and adapt throughout life encourages clients to embrace learning, overcome challenges, and view failures as opportunities for growth. This belief is foundational to fostering resilience and a proactive approach to personal and professional life.

Neurodiversity:

We celebrate neurodiversity—the inherent diversity of human brains and minds. Society creates disability for non-neurotypical people by maintaining rigid norms and structures that fail to accommodate diverse cognitive styles, thereby limiting their opportunities and participation. Embracing different cognitive styles, such as those associated with ADHD and autism, enriches our understanding of the human experience and fosters environments where everyone can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives.

Mental Health:

We emphasize the critical importance of understanding poor mental health, particularly depression and anxiety, as natural responses to the often harsh and demanding conditions of modern society. Recognizing and addressing the societal factors that contribute to these mental health challenges is essential. By doing so, we can create supportive environments where individuals can thrive, feel validated in their experiences, and receive the help they need to navigate and overcome these challenges. This approach underscores our commitment to fostering a compassionate and responsive society that prioritizes mental well-being.

Misleading Brain Heuristics:

We educate women on the ways cognitive shortcuts can mislead their thinking. By enhancing their critical and reflective skills, participants gain self-awareness, enabling them to identify personal growth areas and make more thoughtful, informed decisions. This knowledge boosts confidence in handling complex situations and fosters enhanced critical thinking, leading to wiser choices and a clearer understanding of themselves and their life goals.

Body and Mind Awareness:

We help our clients understand their physiological and psychological responses to manage emotions better. Recognizing the interconnection between mind and body allows for more effective strategies to regulate emotions and responses to stress. This awareness is vital in developing resilience and maintaining mental health in challenging situations.

Environmental Conditioning on Behavior:

We educate our clients that behaviors are responses to environmental conditions, fostering a non-judgmental approach. By understanding that behaviors are often adaptations to past and present environments rather than inherent traits, clients are better equipped to change undesired behaviors and develop more compassionate perspectives towards themselves and others.

Social Construction:

We educate our clients on how societal constructs shape perceptions and interactions, enhancing their ability to critically analyze and navigate the social world. Understanding that many aspects of our reality, including roles, norms, and values, are socially constructed, empowers our clients to challenge and change those constructs that perpetuate inequality and injustice.

Parts Work:

We encourage our clients to use Internal Family Systems (IFS) or other parts-based therapies to understand the origins of their thoughts and beliefs. This approach allows individuals to identify and address various parts of themselves, fostering greater mental harmony and resolving internal conflicts. Parts-based work is instrumental in promoting self-understanding and healing, particularly in addressing deep-seated emotional issues.

Social Awareness and Advocacy

Silence on Social Issues:

We highlight how silence on societal issues perpetuates the status quo and encourage proactive engagement. By understanding the role of silence in maintaining injustices, our clients are motivated to speak out and act against inequalities, realizing that their voices can contribute to societal change and justice.

Cultural Humility and Anti-Oppression:

We believe in practicing cultural humility and striving to be anti-oppressive in our work. Recognizing our own biases and privileges, we commit to ongoing learning and growth in dismantling systemic oppressions and creating more equitable and just communities for all.

Sociological Privilege:

We illuminate the concept of privilege to enhance our clients' understanding of societal dynamics. By recognizing how different privileges affect people’s opportunities and barriers, clients can better understand their own positions and responsibilities within society. This awareness is crucial for fostering equity and advocating for structural changes that benefit everyone.

The History and Status of Women:

We provide insights into the history and current status of women globally, emphasizing an intersectional feminist perspective. This knowledge not only sheds light on the struggles and achievements of women but also highlights ongoing challenges and the need for continued advocacy. It fosters a deeper appreciation for gender equality and the role everyone plays in achieving it.

The History of Racism:

We educate our clients on the history of racism, fostering a deeper commitment to anti-racist practices. This education is vital for understanding the roots and ramifications of racism and for empowering clients to participate in dismantling racist structures, promoting a more inclusive and just society.

Community and Collective Healing:

We value the power of community and collective healing. Life improves when communities come together to share their stories, support each other, and strive for shared objectives. Emphasizing community not only aids in individual growth but also helps to heal societal divisions.

Ecofeminism:

We're dedicated to ecofeminism, recognizing the link between environmental exploitation and societal oppression. Our approach advocates for sustainable living and equity, aiming to dismantle systems that harm both people and the planet. By nurturing a harmonious relationship with nature and promoting inclusivity, we strive for a more sustainable and just world.

Indigenous and Traditional Practices:

We advocate for integrating indigenous and traditional knowledge into modern practices, enhancing holistic well-being. These practices often encompass a deep respect for nature and community, principles that are sometimes overlooked in contemporary health paradigms. By honoring these wisdoms, we reconnect with sustainable practices that promote health, balance, and harmony, both personally and environmentally. (Indigenous communities have been the stewards of sustainable practices and holistic health for centuries, yet their wisdom has often been marginalized or exploited without proper recognition or compensation.)

Critical Thinking and Understanding

Radical Social Critique:

We believe that embracing radical social critique enhances individuals' lives by fostering a deeper understanding of the world and their place within it. By confronting systemic inequalities and injustices, individuals can cultivate empathy, compassion, and a sense of purpose in advocating for societal change. This paradigm empowers individuals to actively engage in creating a more equitable and just world, enriching their lives with a sense of fulfillment and meaning derived from contributing to collective progress and liberation.

Life is Nuanced:

We teach our clients that life is more nuanced than the black-and-white portrayals often presented by society. This understanding helps them navigate complex personal and social dynamics more effectively. By embracing life's gray areas, our clients are better equipped to handle uncertainty and conflict, leading to more adaptive and creative problem-solving.

Critical Thinking:

We value critical thinking as a fundamental part of our approach. We encourage questioning the usual ways of thinking and exploring different perspectives. This focus on critical thinking helps us make well-informed decisions and deepens our understanding of complex issues, improving our problem-solving skills both individually and as a community.

Sociological Imagination:

We teach our clients to use sociological imagination to understand personal experiences in the context of larger social forces. This perspective helps them see the links between their personal lives and the broader societal issues, enabling a deeper understanding of their experiences and fostering a proactive stance towards personal and social change.

The Influence of Social Institutions:

We discuss the significant impact of social institutions on individual lives and societal structures. By understanding how institutions like education, family, and government shape our beliefs and behaviors, clients can more effectively navigate these systems and advocate for reforms that promote fairness and well-being.

Social Mobility:

We clarify how social mobility works within society, including the barriers and pathways involved. This understanding helps clients see the structural factors that influence opportunities and successes, encouraging a more critical view of meritocracy and motivating advocacy for policies that enhance equality of opportunity.

Happiness and Wellness:

We keep our clients updated with the latest research in happiness and wellness, guiding their personal health strategies. This commitment ensures that our practices are based on the most current understanding of what contributes to well-being, ranging from psychological resilience and emotional balance to physical health and social connections. By staying at the forefront of wellness research, we empower our clients with knowledge that can transform their lives.
